In the late morning of Wednesday, September 11, 2024, a sense of unease settled over the 400 block of Jones Village Lane in Dublin, Georgia. Just before noon, at approximately 11:55 a.m., the Dublin Police Department received a dispatch call about a shooting and officers were sent to a residence in the area. Inside the home, they discovered 35-year-old Cortez Kearic Hicks suffering from gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Cortez Hicks succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 12:24 p.m. at Fairview Park Hospital. The Dublin Police Department requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to delve into the circumstances surrounding Hicks's death. For weeks, the investigation into the fatal shooting continued, with law enforcement appealing to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest.
A break in the case came nearly two months later. On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, authorities arrested 18-year-old Quentin Vanteryll Gibson, a resident of Dublin. Gibson was subsequently charged with Murder and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony in connection with the death of Cortez Hicks. Following his arrest, Gibson was booked into the Laurens County jail. The GBI has stated that once their investigation is complete, the case file will be turned over to the Dublin District Attorney's Office for prosecution.
