In the winter of 2023, a residence in the 3300 block of D Street, Southeast in Washington, D.C. became the scene of a grim discovery. On the afternoon of Sunday, February 26th, officers from the Sixth District of the Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the location following a report of a shooting. Inside the home, they found two men who had sustained apparent gunshot wounds.
The victims were identified as 54-year-old Nathaniel Alphonso Howard Sr.
and 57-year-old David Wright, both residents of Southeast, D.C. Emergency medical services arrived at the scene, but neither man showed any signs of life. They were subsequently transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The investigation into the double homicide moved swiftly. Detectives from the Homicide Branch began to piece together the events that led to the fatal shootings. Their work quickly pointed to a suspect who was known to the victims, suggesting the incident was not a random act of violence.
On the very same day the bodies were discovered, an arrest was made in connection with the killings. Forty-one-year-old James Jones, also a resident of Southeast, D.C., was taken into custody. He was charged with two counts of Second Degree Murder While Armed. At the time of his arrest, a firearm was recovered by the authorities. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly released, but the rapid arrest brought a swift, if somber, development in the case.
