In the early afternoon of February 26, 2023, the life of 57-year-old David Roscoe Wright, a Black male from Washington, D.C., was tragically cut short inside a residence in the 3300 block of D Street, Southeast. Wright was not the only victim that day; 54-year-old Nathaniel Howard also lost his life in the same violent incident. Both men were found suffering from gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Metropolitan Police Department's investigation into the double
homicide led to a swift arrest later that same day. The suspect was identified as 41-year-old James Jones of Southeast, D.C. Investigators determined that Jones was known to both Wright and Howard. A firearm was recovered at the time of Jones's arrest.
Initially, Jones was charged with two counts of Second Degree Murder While Armed. However, in November 2023, a federal grand jury indicted him on more severe charges, including two counts of first-degree premeditated murder while armed. Evidence presented indicated that Jones had been residing in Howard's home and, at the time of the murders, was on supervised release and GPS monitoring for prior felony convictions. It was revealed that Howard was shot three times, while Wright sustained at least six gunshot wounds. Jones has been detained pending trial since his arrest.
