On a Thanksgiving evening in Northeast Washington, D.C., a domestic dispute tragically escalated, ending the life of 25-year-old Lavonte McCloud, a Black male. The incident unfolded on November 25, 2021, in the 1600 block of Kenilworth Avenue, Northeast. Around 9:38 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting and discovered McCloud suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.

The investigation into McCloud's death pointed to a conflict involving him, 31-year-old Christian Johnson, and a woman who had children with both men. According to court documents, the woman had called Johnson to bring their child to McCloud's apartment, which led to an argument between her and Johnson. McCloud intervened, asking the woman to stop arguing and go back inside the apartment. Moments after she went inside, gunshots rang out, and McCloud was found shot. Witnesses stated there was a tense relationship between the two men.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch identified Christian Johnson as the suspect. On December 15, 2021, authorities arrested Johnson pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court warrant and charged him with first-degree murder while armed. Johnson was later arraigned on the charges, and court proceedings began, including a preliminary hearing to determine if there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial. During the legal process, Johnson was at one point released to home confinement. The prosecution also noted that McCloud was listed in a Metropolitan Police Department database as an associate of a neighborhood group known as the Kenilworth Crew.
