In the late afternoon of Tuesday, May 8, 2018, tragedy struck in Northeast Washington, D.C., when 26-year-old Bennie Dexter Turner was fatally shot. The incident occurred just before 3 p.m. in the 800 block of 19th Street, NE. After being shot, Turner sought help by running into a nearby home.
Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services transported Turner to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Bennie Turner succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead. The shooting took place in a neighborhood already on edge, as it was just a few blocks from where a man and a 4-year-old boy had been shot the previous month.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Authorities announced that they were searching for three persons of interest who were seen in a black, four-door Ford. The vehicle was last seen turning left onto I Street, Northeast. The police department offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the individuals responsible for Bennie Turner's death. The case remains under investigation by the Homicide Branch of the Metropolitan Police Department.
