In the early evening of Wednesday, March 1, 2023, tragedy struck in Northwest Washington, D.C., when 20-year-old Rasheed Byles, a male resident of Southeast, D.C., was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 7:51 p.m. in the 6400 block of 8th Street, NW. Metropolitan Police Department officers from the Fourth District responded to a report of a shooting and discovered Byles at the scene, unconscious and not breathing, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived and transported Byles to a local hospital in an attempt to save his life. Despite all life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead. The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch is leading the investigation into what they have classified as a homicide.
As of now, the investigation into Rasheed Byles's death remains active and ongoing. Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects, and no arrests have been announced in connection with the shooting. The Metropolitan Police Department is urging anyone with information about the case to come forward and has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this fatal shooting.
