On the evening of May 11, 2023, a verbal dispute earlier in the day escalated into a fatal encounter for 30-year-old DeVonte' Jamal Maxwell in Southeast Washington, D.C. As Maxwell was walking down the sidewalk on Prout Street, he was approached by three individuals. One of these men, Antoine Lynch, had been in a verbal altercation with Maxwell earlier that day as Maxwell walked past his home.
