On the evening of May 11, 2023, a verbal dispute earlier in the day escalated into a fatal encounter for 30-year-old DeVonte' Jamal Maxwell in Southeast Washington, D.C. As Maxwell was walking down the sidewalk on Prout Street, he was approached by three individuals. One of these men, Antoine Lynch, had been in a verbal altercation with Maxwell earlier that day as Maxwell walked past his home.
As the group was about to pass Maxwell, Lynch pulled out a firearm and shot him multiple times.
Emergency responders treated Maxwell at the scene, but he succumbed to his injuries a short time later. The entire incident, including the prior dispute, was captured on surveillance video, which aided in the investigation led by the Homicide Branch of the Metropolitan Police Department.
Antoine Lynch, a 37-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., was subsequently arrested in connection with the shooting. On March 22, 2024, Lynch pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder while armed. A judge later sentenced him to 18 years in prison for the killing of Devonte Maxwell.
