In the summer of 2023, a street brawl in Washington, D.C. turned deadly, claiming the life of 24-year-old Maurice Robinson. The altercation erupted on the evening of Monday, June 12th, on the 2900 block of Southern Avenue, Southeast. The dispute, which reportedly stemmed from an ongoing conflict involving a family member of the alleged shooter, escalated into a physical confrontation between two groups.
As the fight began to de-escalate, gunshots rang out.
Surveillance footage captured the moment David Pena, 46, allegedly fired a gun multiple times at Robinson. Robinson sustained four gunshot wounds to his back and was rushed to a local hospital by his family. Tragically, he succumbed to his severe injuries, which included damage to his aorta, trachea, and esophagus, the following day on June 13, 2023.
In the wake of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to the identification of a suspect. On Tuesday, June 13, 2023, authorities arrested David Pena and charged him with second-degree murder while armed.
During court proceedings, Pena's defense argued that he was acting in self-defense and in defense of his daughter, who was allegedly being attacked during the brawl. However, the prosecution contended that Robinson was moving away from Pena at the time of the shooting, suggesting that the use of deadly force was not justified. A judge ultimately found probable cause to proceed with the charges against Pena, stating, 'The defendant brought a gun to a fist fight, and, unfortunately, Maurice Robinson died because of it.'
