On a tragic Fourth of July in Washington, D.C., a dispute turned deadly, claiming the life of 44-year-old Charles Antonio Stanton. The incident, which unfolded in the unit block of Patterson Street, Northeast, on July 4, 2023, cut short the life of the Southeast, D.C. resident. In the late afternoon, at approximately 4:28 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting and discovered Stanton lying in the street, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response of DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Stanton showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led detectives to a suspect, 38-year-old Brandon Smith of Northwest, D.C. On September 4, 2023, armed with a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, police took Smith into custody and charged him with second-degree murder while armed. In a subsequent court appearance on July 19, 2024, Smith was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in Stanton's death. This sentence came after he pleaded guilty to the charge. During the legal proceedings, it was stated that Smith will also be subject to five years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.
