On an April afternoon, the sounds of gunfire echoed through a neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C., leaving a young man's life cut short. In the waning daylight of Thursday, April 9, 2020, at approximately 5:11 p.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department's Sixth District were called to the 1200 block of 44th Place, Southeast, for a report of a shooting.
There, they found a man unconscious, having sustained a gunshot wound.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital by D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. He was later identified as 19-year-old Taejuan King, a male from the neighboring city of Suitland, Maryland. The authorities have not released any information regarding a possible motive for the shooting.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, detectives from the Homicide Branch began their investigation into the city's latest homicide. The Metropolitan Police Department has since offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for Mr. King's death.
