In the late hours of a Tuesday night in Washington, D.C., a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in the Brightwood neighborhood. When the echoes of the shots faded, two young men lay dying, and a third was wounded. One of the deceased was Sefjuan Jones, a 22-year-old male from Nashville, North Carolina. The incident unfolded just before midnight on October 10, 2017, in the 6200 block of Eighth Street NW.
Police responded to reports of a shooting and discovered three men with gunshot
wounds. All three were rushed to a local hospital, but for Sefjuan Jones and 25-year-old Renard Marsh, it was too late. The third man survived his injuries, which were not considered life-threatening.
Further investigation and witness accounts began to piece together the chaotic moments of that night. It's believed that Renard Marsh was on a porch when he was ambushed by multiple gunmen. As he was being shot at, Marsh managed to draw his own weapon and return fire. In the exchange, he struck Sefjuan Jones, who was reportedly one of the attackers. Both Marsh and Jones succumbed to their wounds in the ensuing gunfight.
In the aftermath, the Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation. However, despite witness reports of multiple assailants, no immediate arrests were made in connection with the shooting. The motive for the attack was not publicly determined by authorities in the initial stages of the investigation. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the deadly encounter that left two men dead and a neighborhood shaken.
