In the late afternoon of July 30, 2023, a dispute in the Brentwood area of Northeast Washington, D.C. turned fatal. Terence Akindo, a 24-year-old male, was shot and killed in the 2300 block of 13th Place, NE. Emergency services responded to the scene around 4:48 p.m. and transported Akindo to a local hospital, but life-saving efforts were unsuccessful. He had sustained gunshot wounds to his head and chest.
The investigation into the homicide quickly pointed to a suspect.
The following day, on July 31, 2023, police arrested 37-year-old Anthony Green. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed. Court documents and witness testimony suggest the shooting stemmed from an ongoing conflict between the two men. One account indicates the altercation began after Akindo confronted Green's girlfriend over an alleged $200 debt for marijuana. Another witness testified that a prior incident involved Akindo allegedly accosting Green's girlfriend.
According to court records, a witness heard Green ask Akindo, 'What you say about my girl?' just before the shooting. Another key witness, who knew both men, claimed to have seen the confrontation escalate. He stated that he witnessed Green, who was wearing a black ski mask, shoot Akindo as he was backing away with his hands up, and then stand over him and fire again. Despite the disguise, an eyewitness was able to identify Green.
During legal proceedings, a judge found that there was probable cause to charge Green with the murder. Green's defense attorneys have challenged the credibility of the prosecution's witnesses and have also criticized the police for their handling of the investigation, including losing the victim's car which they argue could have contained evidence. Green, who was also facing an attempted murder charge in a separate case in Maryland, was denied release from custody as the court considered the shooting to be 'approaching an execution.' The case is proceeding through the court system, with a trial scheduled for March 2025.
