On a late summer afternoon in Washington, D.C., the life of 32-year-old Mannin Quarles, a Black male, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded on Friday, September 1, 2023, in the 5100 block of Astor Place, Southeast. At approximately 1:45 p.m., the sound of gunfire shattered the neighborhood's calm, prompting residents to alert the authorities.
Members of the Metropolitan Police Department's Sixth District were the first to arrive at the scene, where they discovered Quarles
suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services were dispatched, but upon their arrival, they found no signs of life. Quarles was pronounced dead at the scene, his body later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The investigation into Quarles's death was quickly undertaken by the Homicide Branch of the Metropolitan Police Department. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this violent act. Months later, a significant breakthrough was made in the case. On Wednesday, December 6, 2023, authorities located and arrested a suspect in Henderson, North Carolina.
The suspect was identified as 43-year-old Darrick Miles, a man of no fixed address. His arrest was made by members of the Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force, acting on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant. Miles was subsequently charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed. Following his capture, he was set to be extradited back to Washington, D.C., to face the charges brought against him in connection with the death of Mannin Quarles.
