Do you know who murdered Dawud Amed Debruhl in 2019? In the early evening of March 14, 2019, a burst of violence shattered the relative peace of the Columbia Heights neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C. Dawud Debruhl, a 25-year-old male, was in the courtyard of an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Columbia Road NW, near a playground, when his life was abruptly cut short. At approximately 6:21 p.m., a hooded gunman approached him from behind and fired, the sound of the gunshot echoing through the area.
The brazen act, described by the D.C. Police Chief as 'reckless,' sent shockwaves through the community. First responders rushed to the scene to find Debruhl suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, but despite all life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of Dawud Debruhl moved swiftly. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch utilized surveillance footage which captured the cold-blooded nature of the attack, showing the assailant walking up to Debruhl and firing before calmly walking away. This crucial piece of evidence, coupled with other leads, pointed them toward a suspect. On March 28, 2019, two weeks after the shooting, authorities arrested 25-year-old Deontay Britton of Northwest, D.C. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed.
During the course of the investigation, Britton admitted to shooting Debruhl in the back. He claimed the act was born out of a dispute between individuals from the Columbia Heights Village apartments and another group from the vicinity of Belmont Street. Britton alleged that he had been shot at the day prior and that his friends had been threatened. He told investigators he had approached a group intending to have a verbal confrontation and claimed he saw Debruhl reach for his waistband as if for a gun, prompting him to fire. However, it was not confirmed if Debruhl was armed. Ultimately, Deontae Britton pleaded guilty to one count of murder and in September 2019, was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the death of Dawud Debruhl.
