In the pre-dawn hours of December 26, 2023, Tyvez Monroe, a 27-year-old male, was fatally shot while sitting at a bus stop in Washington, D.C. The incident occurred around 4:25 a.m. in the 600 block of Maryland Avenue SW, near the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station. Surveillance footage from the scene captured a man approaching Monroe. The two appeared to exchange words and a fist bump. After a few minutes, the man is seen pulling out a firearm and shooting Monroe in the head.
The glass panel of the bus shelter shattered as Monroe fell to the ground. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Monroe was a former standout basketball player for Augusta University in Georgia, where he graduated with a degree in communication. He had scored over 1,000 points during his college career and was remembered by his coach as a competitive player and a mentor to his younger teammates. Family and friends described him as a good-hearted person who generally avoided confrontations. He grew up in Virginia, graduating from Edison High School in Fairfax County, and had been working as a security officer in the D.C. area prior to his death.
Following the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department released images from the surveillance video to the public, seeking assistance in identifying the person of interest. This led to a tip that helped authorities identify the suspect. On December 28, 2023, Deonte Vondell Spicer, a 36-year-old resident of Northwest D.C., was arrested by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed.
Court documents revealed that after the shooting, the suspect, identified as Spicer, boarded a bus that drove past the wounded Monroe. An investigation into Spicer's background showed he had a prior criminal history and was on supervised release at the time of the alleged offense. During a court hearing in June 2024, a judge found probable cause for Spicer's involvement in the murder, citing the significant evidence against him. A motive for the shooting has not been publicly released by authorities.
