In the summer of 2021, a tragedy unfolded in St. Louis, Missouri, that claimed the lives of a young mother and her child. Terri Bankhead, a 27-year-old female, and her 8-year-old daughter, Da'Nilya Edwards, were found deceased in their home on Pleasant Street on August 11, 2021. The grim discovery was made by Terri's mother, who had become concerned after being unable to reach her daughter.
When she entered the apartment, she found both her daughter and granddaughter bound and fatally shot.
The initial shock and grief within the community quickly turned to a cry for justice. Family and friends remembered Terri as a vibrant and caring single mother, whose sense of humor was a source of joy for those around her. Her daughter, Da'Nilya, was a bright and beloved child. The brutality of their deaths left a deep wound in their neighborhood and the city at large, as investigators began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the double homicide.
The investigation soon focused on a suspect, Prinshun McClain, who lived in the same apartment building as Terri and her daughter. Evidence gathered by the St. Louis police, including McClain's internet search history for items used in the crime, pointed to his involvement. He was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action in connection with their deaths.
McClain's legal proceedings brought further pain to the families of the victims. His first trial ended in a mistrial in November 2022, after the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict. However, the prosecution pursued a second trial, which resulted in a conviction in January 2023. In February of that same year, Prinshun McClain was sentenced to consecutive life sentences for the murders of Terri Bankhead and Da'Nilya Edwards, in addition to two consecutive 15-year terms for armed criminal action. At the time of this conviction, McClain was already serving a 45-year sentence for another murder that occurred on the same day as the discovery of Terri and Da'Nilya's bodies.
