In the early morning hours of Easter Sunday, a tragic event unfolded inside a residential building in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Washington, D.C., abruptly ending the life of 44-year-old Michael James Quander Jr. On March 31, 2024, at approximately 3:03 a.m., the sound of gunshots echoed through the normally quiet 1100 block of 2nd Place, Southeast, prompting a response from the Metropolitan Police Department.
Upon their arrival, First District officers discovered a grim scene within
the building. Michael James Quander Jr., a resident of Northwest D.C., was found suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite any efforts to render aid, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, turning a place of residence into the site of a homicide investigation. The initial aftermath left a community in shock and a police department searching for answers, with little information immediately available about a possible suspect or the motive behind the fatal shooting.
More than a month after the incident, a significant development emerged in the case. On Friday, May 3, 2024, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested 31-year-old Prashawn Brady of Southeast D.C. Authorities charged her with Second Degree Murder While Armed in connection with Quander's death. The investigation uncovered that the act was not random, as Brady and Quander were known to each other. Detectives have indicated that the motive for the deadly shooting appears to be domestic in nature.
