In the late morning hours of a late November day in Washington, D.C., the life of 28-year-old Michael Cunningham was tragically cut short. On November 29, 2019, at approximately 10:51 a.m., gunfire erupted in the 3000 block of 30th Street, Southeast, drawing the attention of Seventh District police officers who were in the vicinity. Upon their arrival at the scene, they discovered a grim tableau: Cunningham and a woman were both suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, Devin Hill, a 25-year-old from Southeast D.C. In a strange turn of events, Hill was also found to have sustained a gunshot wound and had sought help at a nearby fire station. His injury, however, did not prevent his apprehension. Just two days after the fatal shooting, on Sunday, December 1, 2019, Devin Hill was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed and assault with a dangerous weapon in connection with the death of Michael Cunningham.
Another man, Artell Cunningham, was also investigated in relation to a violent crime spree that occurred around the same time, which included carjackings and another homicide. While his name was connected to the series of violent acts that shook the city, it was Devin Hill who was formally charged with the murder of Michael Cunningham. The motive for the shooting was not immediately made public, leaving a community to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a young man. The woman who was also shot in the incident was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
