In the afternoon hours of May 7, 2024, a residence in the 3400 block of 25th Street, Southeast, Washington, D.C., became the scene of a fatal shooting. Tremain Nicholson, a 42-year-old Black male, was found by Metropolitan Police Department officers inside the home, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the arrival of DC Fire and EMS, Nicholson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led to the arrest of 35-year-old Robert Carpenter of Southeast, D.C., on
December 23, 2024. He was subsequently charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed.
Court proceedings began to shed light on the moments leading up to the shooting. Eyewitness testimony described a tense and volatile situation inside the apartment. Nicholson had reportedly entered the apartment in an agitated state, searching for his son with his ex-partner, who was also present. Witnesses stated that Nicholson's behavior was erratic, and he was yelling and pacing. The situation escalated when Nicholson allegedly lunged at his ex-partner, at which point multiple gunshots were fired, and Nicholson fell to the ground. A deputy medical examiner later confirmed that Nicholson died from gunshot wounds. The defense for Robert Carpenter, the boyfriend of Nicholson's ex-partner, presented testimony alleging a history of domestic abuse by Nicholson against the woman. A toxicology report indicated that Nicholson had a high blood alcohol content at the time of his death.
