In the late hours of a summer night in Denver, tragedy struck at the intersection of 28th and Welton streets, a place that would become a memorial to a life cut short. On August 19, 2023, Lumumba Sayers Jr., a 23-year-old man, was fatally shot in a violent outburst that also claimed the life of 25-year-old Gulian Musiwa and left others wounded. The incident was a quadruple-victim shooting that sent shockwaves through the community, particularly because of Sayers Jr.'s public stance against such
violence.
Following in his father's footsteps, Lumumba Sayers Jr. was known as a community-minded individual and an anti-violence activist. He was actively involved in the 'Gloves Up Guns Down' movement, an initiative aimed at steering youth away from street violence and towards positive outlets like boxing. He was not just a proponent of a safer community; he was a son, a friend, and a young man with a future.
The investigation into the shooting led Denver police to identify a suspect. A month after the incident, 24-year-old Tyrell Braxton was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and first-degree assault in connection with the deaths of Sayers Jr. and Musiwa. However, the path to justice took a turn as the murder charges against Braxton were later dismissed, leaving the case unresolved and the families of the victims continuing to seek answers.
