In the late summer of 2022, a burst of violence shattered the peace of an Augusta, Georgia apartment complex, leaving two young men dead and a community in mourning. On the evening of September 19th, inside an apartment on the 2500 block of Cascade Drive, 17-year-old Kentevios Wageman, an African American male, was fatally shot. Alongside him, 19-year-old Kameron Tucker also lost his life in the attack.
Both were discovered unresponsive and were pronounced dead within the hour.
The initial investigation by the Richmond County Sheriff's Office suggested the shooting may have been an act of retaliation for a previous robbery. Witnesses reported that the apartment was filled with people at the time of the brazen shooting, a detail that underscored the audacity of the assailants. As law enforcement worked to piece together the events of that tragic night, the community was left to grapple with the senseless loss of two young lives.
Within weeks, the investigation yielded its first significant breakthrough. In late September 2022, authorities arrested 18-year-old Andre Rountree, charging him with murder in connection with the deaths of Wageman and Tucker. The search for justice did not end there. On November 8, 2022, a second suspect, 20-year-old Arquette Jones, was taken into custody. Jones was charged with two counts of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. It was later revealed that Jones had a prior history of violence, including a murder arrest at the age of 16, raising questions about his presence on the streets at the time of the double homicide. The arrests brought a measure of relief to a community shaken by the brutal killings, as the legal process to hold the accused accountable began.
