On the night of the Fourth of July in 2023, the life of Jalen Johnson, a 26-year-old Black male, was cut short by gunfire in Little Rock, Arkansas. The incident unfolded just after 10:30 p.m. at an apartment building located at 3801 Baseline Road. Responding to a shooting call, officers from the Southwest Patrol Division arrived at the scene to a startling confession. A man in the parking lot, identified as 39-year-old Ollie Jones, immediately engaged with the officers and was taken into custody.

It was Jones himself who had dialed 911, informing the dispatcher that he had shot someone, claiming it was an act of self-defense. Following his direction, police proceeded to the second floor of the apartment building where they discovered Jalen Johnson. He was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but their efforts were unsuccessful, and Johnson was pronounced dead.

Homicide detectives were notified and promptly began an investigation into the deadly holiday shooting. They secured the area, and the Crime Scene Search Unit was called in to process the scene for evidence. Detectives questioned Ollie Jones about the events that led to the shooting. Following this interview, Jones was arrested and formally charged with first-degree murder. He was then transported to the Pulaski County Regional Jail. The body of Jalen Johnson was taken to the State Crime Lab for an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
