In the summer of 2016, a man's life was cut short by gunfire in Phoenix, Arizona. Martin Lopez Meza, a 48-year-old male, was discovered by police on August 12, 2016, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. The events that followed this discovery led to a confrontation at a nearby apartment complex. When officers located a suspect, the encounter escalated, resulting in an officer being injured and the suspect being shot and killed by law enforcement.
The suspect's identity was not publicly released in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
In a separate and unrelated incident four years later, another Phoenix man with a similar name also met a violent end. On the evening of May 24, 2020, police responded to a call in west Phoenix, near 69th Avenue and Garfield. There they found 49-year-old Martin Lopez with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Investigations into the shooting revealed that the incident stemmed from an argument between Lopez and another individual. The following day, on May 25, 2020, police arrested 38-year-old Juan Cazares-Lopez in connection with the fatal shooting. He was subsequently booked into jail.
