Mark P. Hummels, a 43-year-old male attorney, was a man celebrated for his intellect and kindness, a devoted husband and a loving father to two young children. His life, however, was tragically cut short in a violent encounter that stemmed from a legal dispute. On January 30, 2013, Hummels was representing his client, Steven Singer, the 48-year-old CEO of Fusion Contact Centers, in a mediation session in a Phoenix office building.
The mediation was with 70-year-old Arthur Harmon over a business disagreement.
Following the mediation, as Hummels and Singer were in the building's lobby, Harmon opened fire, striking both men. A third individual, a 32-year-old woman named Nichole Hampton, was also wounded in the attack. Singer died from his injuries shortly after the shooting. Hummels was critically wounded and rushed to the hospital, where he was placed on life support. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away on January 31, 2013.
The shooter, Arthur Harmon, fled the scene immediately after the incident, sparking a manhunt. Police later found Harmon deceased in his vehicle in a Mesa parking lot the following day. His death was the result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigations into Harmon's background revealed a history of being involved in numerous lawsuits and a pattern of confrontational behavior. In the months leading up to the fatal shooting, Harmon had sent angry and threatening letters to Hummels, expressing his frustration with the legal proceedings. No arrests were made in connection with the deaths of Mark Hummels and Steven Singer due to the death of the sole suspect.
