On July 18th, the 44-year-old man became a victim of a violent rampage that began with a house fire and escalated into a mass shooting. The chaos started when fire crews responded to a blaze at a home near South Campbell Avenue and East Irene Vista.
As they worked to control the fire, a gunman opened fire on them and others in the vicinity.
Cory Michael Saunders, who was in the area, was tragically shot and killed during this violent outbreak. He was not the only casualty of the day's horrific events. An emergency medical technician, Jacob Dindinger, age 20, was also fatally shot while responding to the initial house fire. The gunman, identified as Leslie Stephen Scarlett, continued his shooting spree, injuring several other people, including a firefighter and a neighbor, before he was ultimately confronted and shot by a police officer.
The investigation that followed revealed a grim picture of the perpetrator. Leslie Stephen Scarlett, a 35-year-old man with a criminal record, was identified as the sole person responsible for the deadly attacks. Authorities reported that Scarlett had a history of "mental health issues." After being wounded by police, Scarlett succumbed to his injuries and died at a local hospital. His death brought an end to the immediate threat, but not to the pain and loss he had inflicted. In the aftermath, it was discovered that the house fire that initiated the tragic chain of events was intentionally set by Scarlett, and the remains of another victim, Jennifer Fells, were found inside the burned home.
