In the winter of 2021, a domestic tragedy unfolded within a home in Tucson, Arizona, ending the life of 50-year-old Maria Miranda, a Hispanic female. On the night of December 15th, the quiet of the 3700 block of East 32nd Street was shattered by an act of violence that would leave two people dead and a family irrevocably broken.
Inside the residence she shared with her partner, Miguel Arvizu, a fatal confrontation occurred.
Police were summoned to the scene late that Wednesday evening, around 11:40 p.m., by a child who lived in the home and made the harrowing 911 call. Upon their arrival, officers discovered the bodies of both Miranda and the 53-year-old Arvizu. Both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators from the Tucson Police Department quickly began to piece together the tragic events of that night. Their preliminary findings pointed towards a murder-suicide. It was determined that Arvizu was the only adult in the home who was in possession of a firearm. The evidence suggested that he had fired his weapon at Miranda before turning it on himself.
The investigation concluded that Miguel Arvizu was the sole suspect in the death of Maria Miranda. With Arvizu deceased, the case was considered closed as the primary suspect was also a victim in the incident. No arrests were made in connection with Miranda's death due to the nature of the murder-suicide. The incident left the community to grapple with the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
