In the warm evening of June 11, 2023, in Phoenix, Arizona, 16-year-old Albert Young Jr., a Black male, attended a house party that had been advertised on social media. The gathering took a tragic turn around 12:15 a.m. when a dispute escalated into a physical altercation, and shots were fired. Albert, a promising high school football player at Sierra Linda High School, was fatally wounded during the incident.
His family described him as a quiet and athletic teenager who was hesitant about attending parties due to the potential for violence.
The Phoenix Police Department launched a homicide investigation in the wake of the shooting. For months, detectives worked to piece together the events of that night. Their efforts led to a significant breakthrough in January 2024, when a 17-year-old male was arrested in connection with Albert's death.
