In the midst of a busy morning commute on January 15, 2025, a confrontation between two drivers on Interstate 10 in Phoenix, Arizona, escalated into a fatal road-rage shooting. The victim was identified as 26-year-old Erian Sandoval. The incident unfolded in the westbound lanes of the freeway, where an altercation led to Sandoval being shot by the other driver.
After being struck by gunfire, Sandoval’s vehicle crashed into the median barrier.
First responders arrived at the scene to find Sandoval unresponsive. He was pronounced dead by Phoenix fire personnel. The other driver involved in the incident did not flee the scene. Instead, he pulled off the highway at 75th Avenue, parked in a nearby restaurant lot, and called 911 to report his involvement in the shooting. He was initially detained by Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers before being turned over to Phoenix Police homicide detectives for questioning.
After an interview with detectives, the shooter, an adult male whose name has not been publicly released, was released from custody pending further investigation. Authorities have indicated that the case will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review to determine whether charges will be filed. The investigation remains ongoing, and police have asked any witnesses who may have seen the events leading up to the shooting or captured it on a dash camera to come forward.
