In the early morning hours of August 6, 2023, a violent encounter in a Phoenix, Arizona apartment complex parking lot claimed the life of 29-year-old Alyssa Leonard. The incident, which also left a male companion injured, unfolded near 32nd and Vogel avenues after what police believe was a road rage altercation that escalated tragically.
According to reports, Leonard and her fiancé were followed to their apartment complex by a passenger car that had been tailgating them.
After they parked and exited their vehicle, an exchange of words with the driver of the other car ensued. The confrontation quickly turned violent when the suspect opened fire, striking both Leonard and her fiancé. Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Leonard succumbed to her injuries. Her fiancé was treated for his injuries and was reported to be in stable condition.
The investigation into the shooting led Phoenix police to identify 21-year-old Kwame Wilson as the primary suspect. The surviving victim identified Wilson in a photo lineup as the individual who shot them. Wilson was taken into custody on August 9, 2023, and is facing a charge of second-degree murder. Court documents revealed that surveillance footage captured a red car, believed to be driven by Wilson, following the victims' vehicle after a traffic incident where the red car ran a stop sign at a high rate of speed.
Further investigation of Wilson's phone uncovered deleted text messages sent on the day of the shooting. In these messages, Wilson reportedly questioned what he was supposed to do and claimed the other parties were the aggressors. One of the final messages indicated his awareness that someone had likely died. It was also revealed that at the time of the incident, Wilson was on release for a separate armed robbery case. Alyssa Leonard, a mother to a 10-year-old daughter, was remembered by her family as a loving person whose life was taken too soon.
