In a tragic turn of events that began to unfold on a grim night in March 2012, 22-year-old Sheila Lomes, a pregnant woman, lost her life in a brutal act of violence in Phoenix, Arizona. Neighbors at a west Phoenix apartment complex were disturbed by the sounds of a woman's terrified screams and desperate banging on doors, a prelude to the horrific discovery that would soon be made. Lomes was found in a stairwell, having been stabbed 38 times.
Adding to the heartbreak of the scene, her 2-year-old son was found crying beside his mother's body, his small, bloody footprints marking the walkway.
The investigation quickly pointed to Gilbert Villareal, Lomes' 36-year-old estranged husband, as the primary suspect. It was revealed that Lomes had been actively trying to leave the abusive relationship and had even secured an emergency protection order against Villareal months before her death. In the immediate aftermath of the murder, Villareal fled to Mexico, managing to evade capture for years and causing the investigation to go cold. His time as a fugitive came to an end in December 2016 when he was arrested in Cancun for the attempted homicide of another woman, whom he had stabbed in the neck. This arrest in Mexico ultimately led to his extradition back to the United States in September 2021 to face charges for the murder of his wife and unborn child.
After his return to Arizona, Gilbert Villareal pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. In December 2023, he was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the deaths of Sheila Lomes and their unborn child. As part of his sentence, Villareal also received five lifetime injunctions, legally barring him from ever contacting the victim's family, including the son he had with Lomes.
