In the early morning hours of February 12, 2024, the quiet of a Northeast Phoenix neighborhood was shattered by a tragic act of violence that claimed the lives of a beloved couple. Marjorie Jeanne 'Marjie' Valentine, a 72-year-old female, and her husband, Sam Allan Miller, 73, were found deceased in their home near 35th Street and Campo Bello Drive. Both had been shot.
Their lives, deeply rooted in the Phoenix community where they were both born and lived their entire lives, were brought to an abrupt and violent end.
The initial call to authorities came around 5:15 a.m. as a domestic violence report. The caller, later identified as the couple's 38-year-old son, Jim Miller, initially told police a fabricated story, claiming his father had shot his mother before turning the gun on himself. However, when officers arrived at the residence, they detained Jim Miller and discovered the bodies of his parents inside. A roommate who was also present in the house was found unharmed.
As detectives began their investigation, the truth of what transpired during the night began to surface. During an interview with investigators, Jim Miller's initial account crumbled, and he confessed to shooting both of his parents. His motive, as he described it to police, stemmed from a history of alleged childhood abuse and recent 'taunting.' Court documents later revealed a troubled past involving mental illness and drug use. A roommate attested to his erratic behavior, stating she was awakened between 3:30 and 4 a.m. by the sound of something being thrown against the wall of his parents' bedroom. Miller admitted to using meth to 'calm himself down' after he 'snapped.'
Following his confession, Jim Miller was arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Jail on two counts of first-degree murder. The community was left to mourn the loss of Marjie and Sam, who were described as being very much in love and strong Christians. They were active members of Christ's Church of the Valley and had a shared love for the beach and animals. They are survived by their daughter, five grandchildren, and numerous other family members.
