In the early hours of a Friday morning in Phoenix, Arizona, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragedy that would leave two people dead and nine police officers injured. Shatifah Lobley, a 29-year-old woman, was shot and killed on February 11, 2022, by her 36-year-old ex-boyfriend, Morris Richard Jones. The events unfolded at a home near 51st Avenue and Elwood Street, where a 911 call was made reporting that a woman had been shot by an intruder.
When the first Phoenix police officer
arrived at the scene, he was ambushed by Jones, who had lured him to the residence. This initial confrontation set off a lengthy standoff. As more officers arrived, a man, later identified as Lobley's brother, emerged from the house carrying a one-month-old baby girl he shared with Jones. He placed the infant on the porch and surrendered to the police. As officers moved in to rescue the baby, Jones opened fire again, injuring four more officers. An additional four officers sustained injuries from shrapnel and ricocheting bullets during the prolonged standoff. The baby was eventually rescued unharmed.
Hours later, after attempts to negotiate with Jones were unsuccessful, a SWAT team entered the home and found both Lobley and Jones with gunshot wounds. Lobley was critically injured and transported to a hospital where she later died. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office later determined that Jones died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigations revealed that Jones had a criminal history and had told his sister during a phone call amid the standoff that he did not want to go back to prison. No arrests were made in Lobley's death as the sole suspect, Morris Richard Jones, took his own life at the scene.
