In the crisp autumn air of a Sunday night in Phoenix, Arizona, the life of 31-year-old Abashe Agwuazim Mathis, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On October 22, 2023, around 10:20 p.m., police were called to the area of 54th and High streets in the northeast part of the city following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Mathis suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
Phoenix police detectives immediately began an investigation into the homicide, seeking to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. For weeks, they worked the case, gathering evidence and following leads. The community was impacted by the passing of Mathis, and authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest, with Silent Witness offering a reward.
The investigation culminated nearly a month later, on November 20, 2023. Detectives had established probable cause and located their suspect, 28-year-old DeAngelo Robinson. Robinson was taken into custody and subsequently booked into jail. He faces multiple felony charges, including one count of murder, in connection with the death of Abashe Mathis.
