Daniel Betker Jr., a 22-year-old Black man described by his family as hardworking and loving, was building a life in Arizona. Originally from Bakersfield, California, he had moved to the state with his mother in 2021. He worked as a mover at an auction business and was saving money to get an apartment with his fiancée, with whom he planned to start a family. His mother, Shawnette Hanson, called him a "loving son.
Hard-working, independent," while his father remembered him as respectable and motivated. His life was cut short just a week before what would have been his 23rd birthday.
In the early morning of January 13, 2024, a dispute in a McDonald's drive-through in Mesa, Arizona, turned fatal. At approximately 3 a.m., at the restaurant near Country Club Drive and Southern Avenue, a man named Carlos Heard II became involved in a verbal altercation with the driver of another vehicle, believing the driver had made offensive remarks. Court documents state that Heard exited his car to confront the other man. Daniel, a passenger in the other car, then retrieved a firearm from the vehicle as Heard also pulled out his own gun. In the confrontation that followed, Heard shot Daniel multiple times. Emergency services rushed Daniel to a local hospital, but he did not survive his injuries.
Mesa Police Department investigators began piecing together the events of that morning. Using surveillance footage from the McDonald’s and nearby businesses, they identified a black Hyundai Elantra as the suspect’s vehicle. A license plate search revealed the car was registered to 26-year-old Carlos Heard II, who also matched the physical description of the shooter provided by witnesses at the scene.
The day after the shooting, on January 14, authorities located the Hyundai Elantra at an apartment complex near Baseline and Alma School roads. After executing search warrants for both the vehicle and an associated apartment, investigators discovered a handgun. Police took Carlos Heard II into custody that day, and he reportedly admitted his involvement in the shooting. He was booked into jail and faced multiple felony charges, including second-degree murder, endangerment, and disorderly conduct.
In July 2025, Carlos Heard II accepted a plea deal in connection with the fatal shooting of Daniel Betker. He was subsequently sentenced to prison.
