In what should have been a joyous celebration, a graduation party in Mesa, Arizona, turned into a scene of tragedy, claiming the life of 32-year-old Auston G. Blanks, a male who had recently returned from a year-long tour of duty in Afghanistan as a US Army reservist. The celebration was for the 17-year-old daughter of Sally Johnson-Huddleston at her home.
The evening's festivities took a dark turn when Brent Matthew Banks arrived.
Banks, the ex-boyfriend of Johnson-Huddleston, reportedly became enraged with jealousy after witnessing her kissing Blanks. An argument ensued, and Banks asked Johnson-Huddleston to step outside, where he punched her in the face. He then walked to his truck and, after a moment of contemplation, returned with two handguns.
Without warning, Banks opened fire, fatally shooting Johnson-Huddleston in the back of the head as she knelt on the ground. He then turned his attention to Blanks, shooting him multiple times. The senseless violence also resulted in the injury of Blanks' 10-year-old son, Hunter. When police arrived at the chaotic scene, Banks fired at them, striking one officer in the arm and shattering a bone.
Following the shootings, Banks barricaded himself inside the home, leading to a standoff with SWAT officers that lasted for several hours. He eventually surrendered to the authorities. Brent Matthew Banks was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Auston G. Blanks and Sally S. Johnson-Huddleston, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and seven felony counts of aggravated assault. Maricopa County prosecutors announced their intention to seek the death penalty in the case against him.
