On April 22, 2023, at approximately 4:30 a.m., Jacksonville Police Department officers responded to a call reporting a deceased individual in the 1000 block of Clemons Drive, Jacksonville, Texas. Upon arrival, they discovered two male victims, identified as 37-year-old Tony B. McCuin of Bullard and 35-year-old Coray R. McCuin of Jacksonville, both suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.
Later that evening, authorities arrested 29-year-old Jacksonville resident Dexter Lynn Davis on an unrelated charge. Subsequent investigations led to Davis being charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of Tony and Coray McCuin.
In May 2023, prosecutors announced they would not seek the death penalty against Davis. In Texas, a capital murder conviction can result in either a death sentence or life imprisonment without parole. Davis's next court appearance was scheduled for July 1, 2023, at the Cherokee County Courthouse, though a trial date had not been set at that time.
