On April 22, 2023, at approximately 4:30 a.m., Jacksonville Police Department officers responded to a report of a deceased individual in the 1000 block of Clemons Drive in Jacksonville, Texas. Upon arrival, they discovered two male victims, identified as 35-year-old Coray R. McCuin of Jacksonville and 37-year-old Toyn B. McCuin of Bullard, both suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.
Later that evening, authorities arrested 29-year-old Jacksonville resident Dexter Lynn Davis on an unrelated charge. Subsequent investigations led to Davis being charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of Coray and Toyn McCuin.
In May 2023, prosecutors announced they would not seek the death penalty against Davis. Under Texas law, a capital murder conviction can result in either a death sentence or life imprisonment without parole. Davis's next court appearance was scheduled for July 1, 2023, at the Cherokee County Courthouse, though a trial date had not been set at that time.
