Gerla's death was part of a quadruple homicide that occurred at a home in New Summerfield,
Texas. Along with Gerla, the victims included John Clinton, 18, Ami Hickey, 39, and Amanda Bain, 39. The suspects, Jesse Pawlowski, 20, Dylan Welch, 21, and Billy Dean Phillips, 37, all from Jacksonville, were arrested and charged with capital murder. The bond for each suspect was set at $1 million.
According to the investigation, the suspects planned to steal a handgun that Clinton was selling. They first killed Clinton in the driveway and then entered the home, shooting the remaining victims who were sleeping inside. Pawlowski, who was involved in a polyamorous relationship with Clinton and Gerla, admitted to the plan and his involvement in the crime.
The Cherokee County District Attorney's Office decided not to seek the death penalty for Dylan Welch, but it remains an option for Jesse Pawlowski and Billy Dean Phillips. The case is still ongoing, and no future court dates have been set.
