On October 2, 1992, Patrol Officer Randy J. Zimmerman, aged 30, of the Jacksonville Police Department in Texas, tragically lost his life. Upon arrival, Zimmerman, along with his partner Officer Brixey Lewis and Reserve Deputy Shane Cannon, separated the male and female involved in the disturbance. Zimmerman had Deputy Cannon escort the female into another room while he and Officer Lewis asked the male to stand up so he could be placed under arrest.
As the man stood up, he produced a handgun from his waistband and began shooting at the officers. Officer Zimmerman was struck in the neck and the back of his left arm but managed to return fire. Officer Lewis attempted to return fire but was struck in his gun hand, causing his service weapon to malfunction. Deputy Cannon returned fire, killing the suspect. Despite his injuries, Officer Zimmerman's actions demonstrated his bravery and dedication to his duty.
