On the evening of September 7, 2023, Michael Jacobs, a 49-year-old man, was working his shift as a manager at a CVS pharmacy in Mesa, Arizona. His life was tragically cut short in a violent encounter that began with a simple act of shoplifting. Earlier in the day, Jacobs had a confrontation with a man named Jared Sevey, who was allegedly shoplifting in the store.
Although CVS declined to press charges and Sevey was allowed to leave, the incident set in motion a devastating chain of events.
Sevey, reportedly angered by the encounter, went to his home, retrieved a firearm, and then returned to the CVS with the intention of confronting Jacobs. Upon his return, he sought out Jacobs and, after ordering employees to get customers out of the store, he opened fire. Jacobs sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The violent act left his family, including his wife of 23 years and their children, in a state of shock and profound grief.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement was able to quickly identify a suspect. A description of the shooter was provided by a caller, and detectives utilizing the Real Time Crime Center's cameras located a person matching the description near the CVS. Officers found Jared Sevey, who was 38 years old at the time, across the street from the pharmacy and witnessed him attempting to discard a gun into a canal. Upon his detention, officers noticed blood on him, and he made spontaneous statements admitting to the shooting.
Jared Sevey was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree premeditated murder, prohibited possession of a firearm, and tampering with evidence. During his interview with detectives, Sevey admitted to the shooting, stating he was tired of being bullied and that the earlier altercation was the 'last straw'. In the summer of the following year, Sevey pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree burglary. He was sentenced to nearly four decades in prison for the murder of Michael Jacobs.
