On a Wednesday evening in May, a gathering at a Mesa, Arizona, apartment complex took a tragic turn, ending the life of 16-year-old Azriel Lloyd. The incident unfolded just before 10 p.m. on May 21st at the Premiere at Dana Park apartments, located at 1439 S. Val Vista Drive. Police responded to reports of a shooting and discovered two individuals with gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a nearby hospital, but Lloyd ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The second victim, an adult male, was expected to survive.
Initial investigations by the Mesa Police Department suggested that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Detectives learned that Lloyd had been hosting a party at an apartment. It is believed that he and the other man who was injured had made plans to meet someone with the intention of robbing them. This planned robbery appears to have escalated, leading to the fatal shooting. A witness who rendered aid to the surviving victim reported that the shooter was wearing a ski mask and fled the scene in a red sedan.
The investigation into Azriel Lloyd's death spanned several months and involved numerous interviews and the execution of multiple search warrants across Mesa and other cities in the Phoenix area. Early in the investigation, a potential suspect vehicle was identified and followed to the Litchfield Park area, leading to a brief standoff. While two individuals were initially questioned, no immediate arrests were made. Over the course of the investigation, several firearms were recovered, and forensic analysis of the evidence played a crucial role in building a case against the individuals believed to be responsible.
Six months after the shooting, the Mesa Police Department announced the arrests of three suspects in connection with the homicide. Bre'on Ballard, 18, Nikko Cartier, 18, and Jameeier White, 19, were taken into custody. Ballard was apprehended in California, while Cartier and White were arrested in Arizona. All three had been identified as persons of interest early in the investigation. They are now facing charges of first-degree murder and are each being held on a $2 million bond.
