In a tragic series of events that unfolded across Mesa and Phoenix, Arizona, a 40-year-old man named John Swain lost his life in a string of senseless shootings. The violence began on a Friday afternoon in May 2023 and concluded early the next morning, leaving a trail of devastation. In total, four people were killed and one woman was injured.
The man authorities say is responsible, 20-year-old Iren Byers, was apprehended by law enforcement.
Following his arrest for trespassing, Byers reportedly confessed to the entire shooting spree. During his confession, he directed officers to the location of the 9mm handgun used in the attacks, as well as the clothing he was wearing at the time. Ballistic evidence from the various crime scenes was matched to the single firearm, solidifying the link between the separate incidents.
Court documents revealed a disturbing motive behind the rampage. Byers allegedly expressed anger towards individuals experiencing homelessness and those who use drugs. According to police, the interactions between Byers and his victims were random and tragically brief.
John Swain, who was homeless, encountered Byers near some railroad tracks in Mesa. After a short conversation where Swain mentioned he was not from the area, Byers allegedly shot him in the head. He later told investigators that he did not summon medical assistance for any of the victims because he felt they 'didn't deserve it'. Iren Byers was subsequently charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder.
