In the early morning hours of a late August day in Mesa, Arizona, a dispute between two brothers escalated into a fatal encounter that left one of them dead. The man who lost his life was John Paul McAdam, a 24-year-old male. The incident, which unfolded on August 30, 2015, cut his life short and led to the arrest of his younger brother.
Reports from that night indicate that John McAdam and his 21-year-old brother, Evan Mathew McAdam, were passengers in a vehicle driven by a woman when a
heated argument broke out between them. The disagreement turned physical after the vehicle stopped and the brothers exited. Witnesses later told Mesa Police that the two had been fighting just before a gunshot was heard. According to these accounts, John McAdam was walking away from his brother and heading back toward the vehicle when he was shot.
First responders were called to the home near the 7500 block of East University just after 12:30 a.m. and found John McAdam with a gunshot wound. Rescue crews rendered aid and transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Evan McAdam surrendered to the authorities who had arrived at the scene.
During the initial investigation, Evan McAdam claimed that he had shot his older brother in an act of self-defense, a claim that stood in contrast to witness statements suggesting his brother was retreating from the altercation. He was taken into custody and later booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on one count of second-degree murder. While Evan McAdam was said to be cooperating with investigators, the specific reason for the deadly argument between the siblings remained unclear to the public.
