In the pre-dawn hours of October 29, 2025, the city of Omaha, Nebraska was once again touched by violence with the death of Leonard Jones, a 27-year-old Black/African American male. The incident unfolded in the Midtown neighborhood, near the intersection of 35th and Davenport streets, a community of young professionals and families.
Reports of gunfire drew Omaha Police Department officers to the scene at approximately 4:20 a.m.
There, they discovered Jones lying in the street, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate medical attention he received, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman driving in the area at the time of the shooting alerted authorities, telling police she believed her own vehicle was being fired upon before she saw Jones on the ground and called for help. Investigators have stated that she had no connection to the shooting.
As the investigation into his death commenced, the Omaha Police Department's Homicide Unit identified a vehicle of interest, a white Chrysler, which was located and searched near 24th and Meredith. While no immediate arrests were made, authorities have named 32-year-old Ricardo Kirk as a person of interest in the case. Kirk is also wanted on a felony warrant for a separate shooting that occurred on the same day. Police have indicated that they believe the shooting was targeted and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
