In the summer of 2014, the life of Johnny Haynes, a 59-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in his own front yard in Omaha, Nebraska. On the morning of June 18, Haynes was doing yard work at his home near 36th and Patrick Avenue when he was shot multiple times. Despite having previously survived a battle with cancer, he did not survive the violent attack.
The sudden and brutal nature of his death left his family and the community in shock.
Just a couple of months later, on what would have been his 60th birthday, his loved ones gathered to celebrate his life and to make a public plea for answers. They remembered him as a man who had been looking forward to this milestone, even planning a large party for the occasion. The family expressed their profound loss and their determination to see justice served, stating their firm belief that the person responsible would eventually be caught.
In the wake of the shooting, the Omaha Police Department launched a homicide investigation. As of the time of his family's public appeal, no arrests had been made, and no suspects had been publicly identified. In an effort to generate leads, Omaha Crime Stoppers offered a significant cash reward for any information that would lead to the arrest of the individual or individuals responsible for Johnny Haynes's murder. The case, however, went cold, and the killer or killers have yet to be brought to justice, leaving a lingering sense of unresolved grief and a quest for closure for his family.
