In the winter of 2015, a fatal encounter in an Omaha, Nebraska park brought a tragic end to the life of 46-year-old Ray Patterson, a Black / African American male. On the evening of January 26th, Patterson was found shot in his car at Acre Park, located near 50th and Fort Streets. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries, leaving a community in shock and a family to mourn their loss.
The subsequent investigation into Patterson s death quickly uncovered
a sinister plot of robbery that had escalated to murder. Authorities determined that Patterson had been lured to the park under the pretense of a marijuana transaction. It was there that he was ambushed in an attempt to rob him of money he was known to be carrying. The botched robbery ended with Patterson being fatally shot, a senseless act of violence that cut his life short.
Investigators identified two primary suspects in the case: Anthony Hollins and Janessa Arias. According to prosecutors, the 21-year-old Arias had met Patterson earlier in the day and became aware that he had a significant amount of cash. She then conspired with Hollins to set up the meeting at the park with the intention of robbing him. Hollins was identified as the individual who was present at the scene and involved in the fatal confrontation.
In the aftermath of the investigation, both Hollins and Arias were apprehended and faced justice for their roles in Ray Patterson's death. Anthony Hollins ultimately pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder and a weapons charge. For his part in the deadly robbery, he was sentenced to serve 55 to 80 years in prison. Janessa Arias, for her role in orchestrating the robbery, was convicted of conspiracy and received a sentence of 20 to 30 years. While Hollins accepted responsibility for his involvement, his family maintained that another individual at the scene was the one who actually fired the fatal shot. Despite this claim, the prosecution held Hollins accountable for the murder.
