On the evening of September 19, 2017, tragedy struck in Kansas City, Missouri, when 30-year-old Orlando Gentry was fatally shot outside an apartment complex. Gentry, a father of twelve and a lifelong resident of the city, had stepped out of a building near East 50th Street and Troost Avenue around 10:00 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing a Hispanic male sitting outside the apartment, apparently lying in wait.
As Gentry exited the building, the assailant opened fire, striking him multiple times before fleeing the scene. In the chaotic moments that followed, Gentry’s 12-year-old stepson contacted emergency services to report the shooting, but Gentry succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the homicide initially yielded few leads, and the case remained unsolved for several months. At the time of his death, Gentry had been navigating his own legal challenges; he was facing pending charges related to a shooting incident at a local church earlier that year, although he had also recently been recognized in the community as a 'Good Samaritan' for helping rescue a man trapped under a vehicle. Despite these complexities, detectives struggled to identify his killer until a break in the case came from an unrelated crime nearly eight months later.
In May 2018, a man reported being robbed at gunpoint and identified the perpetrator to police. During the subsequent investigation, this robbery victim revealed that the man who robbed him—identified as Luis A. Reyes—had previously confessed to killing someone at 50th and Troost. The witness stated that Reyes admitted to the murder and expressed remorse over the act. Following this new information, investigators re-interviewed witnesses from the night of Gentry's death, who corroborated the identification of Reyes as the individual seen waiting outside the apartment.
As a result of these findings, prosecutors charged Luis A. Reyes, who was 23 years old at the time of the accusation, with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in January 2019. Authorities noted that Reyes was already in custody at the Jackson County Detention Center for unrelated matters when the murder charges were filed. A cash bond of $250,000 was set, marking a significant turn in the effort to seek justice for Gentry’s death more than a year after the fatal shooting occurred.
