In a moment of escalating tension that tragically turned fatal, a family argument in a Phoenix apartment complex ended the life of 39-year-old Eugene Smith. The incident, which unfolded on the evening of July 31st, resulted in Smith suffering a fatal gunshot wound. He was a Black/African American man.
Responding to a call about a shooting just before 10:30 p.m. at an apartment complex located at 1431 E. Cheryl Drive, Phoenix police officers arrived to a grim scene.
Inside an apartment, they discovered Smith wounded. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation pointed to a heated argument and physical altercation between Smith and his 18-year-old stepson, Camron Greenwood, as the catalyst for the deadly encounter. In the midst of the fight, Greenwood allegedly drew a handgun and fired at his stepfather.
Following the shooting, authorities took Camron Greenwood into custody. He was subsequently arrested and has been booked into jail to face a charge of second-degree murder. The specifics of what led to the argument are still under investigation by detectives.
