In the winter of 1960, a wave of violence orchestrated by a teenage spree killer tragically found its way to Phoenix, Arizona, culminating in the death of 55-year-old Ira Lee Hardison. On February 20th of that year, Hardison's life was cut short when he was fatally shot. His death was not an isolated incident but part of a deadly rampage that spanned multiple states and claimed several lives.
The perpetrator of this senseless act was 17-year-old Dennis Manaford Whitney.
His violent journey began just over a week earlier, on February 12, 1960, with the robbery and murder of a gas station attendant in Victorville, California. From there, Whitney made his way to Phoenix, where his path crossed with Ira Lee Hardison. On the same day he killed Hardison, Whitney also murdered a 40-year-old man named Spencer Frazier and stole his vehicle, continuing his deadly trek across the country.
Whitney's crime spree, marked by a string of robberies and murders, finally came to an end on March 5, 1960, when he was apprehended in Miami, Florida. By the time of his capture, he was responsible for the deaths of seven people. Following his arrest, Dennis Manaford Whitney was convicted for the murders he committed, including that of Ira Lee Hardison.
He was initially sentenced to death for his heinous crimes. However, in 1972, his sentence was commuted to life in prison. After spending 44 years behind bars, Whitney died in prison on April 24, 2005, closing a dark chapter that began with a string of tragic and unnecessary deaths, including that of Ira Lee Hardison in Phoenix.
