As he neared his residence in the area of Indian School Road and 67th Avenue, he was fatally shot and found in the roadway. The initial mystery surrounding Peña's death began to unravel as investigators connected his case to a string of other seemingly random and brutal shootings that had been terrorizing the predominantly Latino neighborhood of Maryvale since the previous year.
